I’ll admit I was skeptical walking into this concert. I saw videos of the noise jams the duo is performing on their current tour and I feared that Broadcast’s original psychedelic pop sound had finally fallen off the cliff of noise for the sake of it.
At first I was uncomfortable. The unorganized clicks, echos, and audio fuzz reflected the jumbled images projected on the screen between the tables of gear that flanked the stage.

Patterns formed, but fleetingly. High pitched synths and haunting whispers penetrated deep within my brain tissues as the low tonal sound waves enveloped my body and dragged me into the chaotic undercurrents.
Broadcast was reprogramming me with psychedelic trickery. Sensory overload.
About twenty minutes passed before the noise suddenly gave way to song. The harsh noises softened into lovingly crafted melodies. The crowd erupted with joy.

Broadcast expertly piloted us through a Stanley Kubrick 2001-esque psychedelic sound oddity. The journey starved us of coherence and the warmth of familiar song. When the duo touched down and instruments appeared from back stage, the perfectly crafted songs swept over the crowd whose now bent minds were famished for something recognizable. The bouncing bass line of Corporeal felt like a rainbow after a violent storm. A wonderful lesson on the use of contrast.

Broadcast served us a pile of sharply textured, and sometimes offensive, raw ingredients during the appetizer course before cooking the same ingredients into a scrumptious feast for the ears. Sadly, there was no dessert.
