Lego Amazingness

Once again, the internet has proven that my Lego skills are far too inadequate to compete among the online masses.

I thought I was clever building a castle that used hinges to open.
But folding inwards? I admit defeat.

LOL Cat Bible

LOL Cat Bible

The LOL Catz phenomenon started in 2006 and it doesn’t look like it’ll be dying out anytime soon. In fact, the fandom surrounding LOL Catz has grown so huge that the once cutesy fad, a mainstay of office forwards, has resulted in an almost complete translation of the bible into LOL Catz-speak.

Seriously, it’s amazing what useless tasks people can accomplish when the work is divided up among a community of net dwellers using a wiki.

The project is as hilarious as it is impressive. Here are some gems:

Genesis 1:26
An Ceiling Cat sayed, letz us do peeps like uz, becuz we ish teh qte, An let min p0wnz0r becuz tehy has can openers.”

JEEZUSCAT

Exodus 19:16-19
then there waz big storm and kittehs were like OMGWTFBBQ mozus and his peeps went 2 see teh ceiling cat Ceiling Cat fell off teh ceiling, and he waz all on fire mozus was like wtf and ceiling cat was like chill out d00dz”

Job 1:9-11
“No wai!” sed Basement Cat. “U just plyin favrits. If u take his cheezburgers, oar his bukkit, he no laiks u no moar.”

Chain Factor

Chain Factor - http://chainfactor.com/

Chain Factor is love at first play.

The game revolves around a devilishly simple concept that can be used to create complex chain reactions. Each disc has a number on it. If the row or column that the disc is in has the same amount of discs as the number on it, it disappears, causing the column or row to change, causing more discs to disappear, causing the column or row to change, causing… you get the point.

The gameplay is simple, addictive, and can become incredibly strategic.
The visuals are minimalist and sharp.
The music is simply heavenly.

Any fan of Steve Reich could happily turn this game on and walk away just to have the music playing in the background. I know because I’ve done this.

If you’re looking for something that can simultaneously relax and challenge you, check out Chain Factor.

I watched the film In Bruges last night. If you haven’t seen it, watch it. The black comedy is set in the UNESCO World Heritage city of Bruges, Belgium. It reminded me of the time I spent studying old European buildings, like this one.

I snapped this shot in France when I was just getting into photography. I still think it’s one of the best pictures I’ve ever taken.

Ferry Halim's Soft Visuals

Orisinal is the pet project of artist and Flash programmer Ferry Halim. You may have come across his games on various commercial websites, but his true artistic and game design genius shines brightest in his own games.

Halim blends cuddly visuals with luscious music and a dash of incredibly addictive arcade-style gameplay to make some of the best flash games I’ve ever played. Start with the top left and work your way down. Enjoy.

And if you’re wondering how the whole auto-tune craze started, Nova Science Now did an interesting piece on the once hush-hush studio process.

Portland, OR

Welcome to Portland, land of hippies, hipsters, and horticulturalists. Eco-chic and organic food are passé. There are more trendy hair salons per square mile than anywhere I’ve ever been and they don’t even know what to do with all the artsy lofts that are popping up left and right.

Portland is a beautiful city that everyone should visit. That is of course unless you hate hipsters, in which case you might be tempted raze the city to the ground.

If you look kindly on plaid and ironic mustaches, then you’ll feel right at home with the food, music, and book loving citizens who roam the cobblestone streets. Whether you consider yourself a hipster or just a fan of its scene, then do yourself a favor and stay at the Ace Hotel. Its charms are too numerous to list. Some of its rooms even have record players and a milk crate of LPs that only an “elite white person” would have heard of, to borrow a phrase from Stuff White People Like.

Don’t get me wrong, you don’t have to be a kale-eating, skinny-jeans wearing organic foodophile to enjoy Portland. Although it primarily caters to the health conscious, the city is home to a damn fine doughnut.

A friend who grew up in Portland insisted that chomping on a Voodoo Doughnut was an essential experience and I’m sure glad she did. It’s fairly hard to spot, but the lineup outside the building is a hint. The menu is humongous and even includes a maple bacon doughnut. I suggest getting Voodoo dozen (they choose for you) followed by a coronary.

Unfortunately my visit to Portland was a whirlwind that lasted less than 24 hours. Luckily my brief stint in the city was enough to make want to go back. I mean, how can you not like a city that has a Waffle Window?

I’ve never been.
But when I do go, I want to arrive on a boat like this awesome person.
